Extant studies on Nigerian insurgencies have focused on either its historical trajectory, economic implications, or its socio-political impacts on the society, neglecting the ideological representation of Nigerian Presidents and the linguistic resources deployed in their speeches on insurgent attacks to represent these ideologies. The study analysed the discursive patterns deployed in selected presidential speeches on insurgencies in the Fourth Republic. Two speeches delivered by two Nigerian presidents were selected, transcribed, and analysed, using van Dijk’s (1992), Model of Critical Discourse Analysis. The study revealed the ideologies of the speakers, as represented in their respective speeches on various insurgencies. The ideologies of the speakers were marked by certain lexical devices employed in their speeches. The study also revealed the functions of the discursive patterns deployed by the speakers, as well as the representation of power and its effect on the masses. Based on its findings, the study concluded that presidential speeches on insurgencies in the Fourth Republic convey different ideologies of the selected leaders, and also unveiled their attitudes, such as empathy, commitment, threats etc. The study also found that various approaches and policies were adopted by the leaders towards such insurgencies.
